Short Description of Instrument |
The MNA® is a validated nutrition screening and assessment tool that can identify geriatric patients age 65 and above who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.
The assessment was developed by Nestle and leading international geriatricians and remains one of the few validated screening tools for the elderly. It has been well validated in international studies in a variety of settings and correlates with morbidity and mortality.
|
Comments/Special Instructions |
Administration of the MNA requires anthropomorphic measurements such as BMI, mid-arm, and calf circumference.
|
Scoring and Psychometric Properties |
Scoring: Total score is sum of the assessment and screening section scores. If greater than 23.5, patient is in normal state of nutrition; if less than 23.5, patient is referred to a specialist for nutrition intervention.
|
Rationale/Justification |
Strengths: Well-validated tool, with high sensitivity, specificity, and reliability. The MNA has been shown to be useful for nutritional intervention follow-up as well.
Weaknesses: None identified aside from lack of rigorous validation studies in the PD population specifically.
